Priory Street Extension and remodeling of a Lewes Town House.

The proposal comprised of the demolition of a rear non original upvc conservatory structure and an existing single storey side extension, to be replaced with a new rendered single storey side extension with roof lights , french doors and bay window. Existing window openings to the ground floor rear elevation were lowered to accommodate powder coated aluminium French doors and fixed lights.

The existing layout comprises a basement, currently used as storage, accessed from the ground floor hallway. The front entrance at street level opens onto a corridor that leads to the main stairwell and hall way, off which are located the kitchen and dining room to the rear and the living room to the front of the building. The utility room is also to the rear of the building and is a thoroughfare to the side extension which connects the garage to the front and the conservatory to the rear. The upper storeys comprise 3 bedrooms and a bathroom on each floor.

The layout seeks to improve flow and circulation as well as create more of a connection between the garden and the interior at ground floor level by opening up the plan to allow more views from the internal space to the exterior and introducing more light to the interior spaces.

The proposal  improves the scale of the existing accommodation by removing the unsympathetic conservatory structure and re-instating the rear line of the building to it’s more historic form. The proposed side extension closely follows the dimensions and footprint of the existing side extension.

The proposed new doors and windows to the rear elevation respect the proportions of the existing openings by lining up with the openings above and by carefully considering the frame design and profile to echo the existing multi paned upper sash of the existing timber frame sash windows in the property with the 4 leaf traditional door design to the front garage doors and rear french doors.

The Priory Street scheme represents a sensitive remodelling and reworking of a historic structure, to provide warm and flexible living space.
